Ok so mostly, I don’t want there to be no posts when I launch, but also I figured I might as well write words about where I am with Broken.

For background – Broken has always been my personal project, and has always been planned to come in three parts (now three novels), but the initial attempt at it was done in comic format with my partner Remi illustrating. It was a fun experiment, but it never managed to capture the emotions and internal thought processes I wanted to explore with the main character, Sebby (outside a few successes, like Mouse, which I plan to post here at some point). So at the end of 2025, we both decided that it’d be best if I set out to explore it in a novel format.

I switched in Jan 26, and took an initial stab at it by converting my outline for the comic into purely written format. I got one chapter in before realizing that it didn’t really work. So many of the choices made for the story initially were to allow for visual design elements that were no longer necessary and that were clunky when translated to an entirely text format. On top of that, the story itself didn’t fit – it felt like I was forcing it into a shape it didn’t want to be.

So, in February, I started in earnest on a reworked version of Broken. It changed from being dual-perspectives to dual-timelines – I realized quickly that Sebby’s mind and internal perspectives were the most appealing and interesting thing I had to offer. So I decided to set it in two parts – the first storyline (which I’ll refer to as the “Present”) has him suddenly giving up one life to start another, while the second storyline (which I’ll refer to as the “Past”) follows him ~8 years prior, where he was forced from one life into a new, unexpected one. I’ll get more into why at some other point on here, but I promise I have reasons. 🙂

Life interfered and stole most of my attention and time from mid-Feb to March, and I wasn’t able to fully sink into the work again until about April. Since then, I’ve been working steadily on it, focusing entirely on the Past storyline. I’m at ~12 of 18 chapters drafted for that storyline so far, word count ~40k+, though that will majorly shrink as I get to editing (write big, edit big).

I’m still hopeful I’ll be able to finish the entire Past storyline before the end of this year, and possibly get 3-4 chapters into the Present. That might be foolish, but I can be quite foolish, so. We will see 🙂
